It isn't to me. If you are not a theist, I doubt you can understand.

Religion is simply a belief in a force other than that of man's creation. It's not a belief that is designed to "explain the inexplicable," but simply something one believes in and assigns value to.

Religion allows for more mysteries in life than science ever will.

Just like theories of science are mankind's attempt to explain the observed and the unknown.

As to being out of date, well, that's highly subjective and scientists should recognize this more than most... there are any number of theories that have had to be rejected or revised because of new observations...

Religions were created to hide the truth from the masses and keep them ignorant. The stories of the bible once demystified are about The Sun, astronomy, astrology, and shamanic spiritual use of a psychoactive mushroom code named Jesus that the ancient people believed allowed them to attain a higher form of conciousness.

We all want to believe that no matter WHAT we do... if we ask for forgiveness someone will forgive us. In reality... that could never happen and the person not be hurt by it at all. We are also scared of death and want to think that we will be in a safe place and that those we have lost will be in a safe place as well. People don't want too much mystery... it scares them and blows their mind. I like this question you asked because we as people are always going to be trying to explain what we don't know... Like why did I get a pimple overnight? Haha. You know what I mean. Very good question!
