well, school does influence children greatly. Also, how do you base rules and discipline?
'its wrong to cheat on tests, tommy' 'Why' 'because we said so' ?? that doesnt exactly set an example for personal integrity. 'well I believe that cheating is okay, so why shouldnt I do it?'
I dont think religion should be enforced, but religion affects morality and values, and there has to be a standard and enforcement for those, at least on school premisis.
How do you come up with objective standards of morality and code of conduct for use within schools?
Not saying every school should be full of Jesus, or muhammed, or whatever else, because I want to learn objectively, and have the curricula accoutabe on an acedemic level rather than a moral level , but taking away an outside basis for right and wrong also takes away any responsibility to act according to what is deemed right and wrong. so how do you set and enforce rules. Also, how do you judge how to teach neutral information? Mathmatics and chemistry and languages are easy, but what about humanities and arts, things that are less objective on a true/false level but still acedemically and socially relevent? |
